Albion are close to signing the Tottenham Hotspur defender Federico Fazio for a fee in the region of £5m.
The 28-year-old former Sevilla man made 32 appearances for Spurs last season after signing last summer for £8m.
But new arrivals at White Hart Lane have pushed Fazio down the pecking order and Albion are now hoping to sign the tall defender.
The 6ft 5in defender has made three appearances for his nation and was also part of the side that won the Olympics in China.
Fazio also captained the Sevilla side that won the Europa League in 2014.
His arrival at The Hawthorns casts doubt over the future of Joleon Lescott. The 33-year-old was dropped for Albion’s game at Watford and was the subject of a transfer bid earlier in the summer from Aston Villa.
Lescott was expected to extend his deal at The Hawthorns for another year – although that option now looks unlikely, especially after James Chester’s arrival at the club this summer.
