West Bromwich Albion today broke their transfer record after signing Salomon Rondon from Zenit St Petersburg for £12m.
The 25-year-old Venezuela international has penned a four-year contract at The Hawthorns after impressing in Russia.
The 6’ 3” striker scored 20 goals in 37 appearances last season after signing from Ruban Kazan. For his country, Rondon has netted 13 times in 39 appearances.
Baggies boss Tony Pulis spoke of his excitement of attracting a player of Rondon’s quality to The Hawthorns.
“He’s got a fantastic goalscoring record in some of the top leagues in Europe and for his country. He’s 25 years of age and still to fulfil his full potential.
“We hope he hits the ground running of course but understand it might take him time to settle. I’m sure our fans will help him and get behind him.
“But we feel with age on his side and the prices English clubs are asking for their players, it’s a deal worth doing.
Rondon, who was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this summer, said he can’t wait to start training with his new teammates.
“I am very happy to be here,” said Albion’s record signing.
"This is a new opportunity in my career. I can’t wait to be with the other players and to play.
"The club showed a lot of interest in me, that’s what is important for a player, what you take into account, and there are expectations of me."
The striker becomes Albion’s fifth signing of the summer after the arrivals of James McClean, James Chester, Rickie Lambert and Serge Gnarby.
