Second division Tranmere Rovers had rejected an initial £1.5million bid for the player, who has pulled out of the Welsh national side with a calf strain ahead of their friendly clash with Croatia.

We are lead to understand that Tranmere have accepted the improved offer, and that Koumas could make his debut as soon as the game with Leeds United at the weekend.

Speaking to the Express And Star yesterday manager Gary Megson confirmed that he was trying to bring Koumas to the club.

"Koumas is one of several players we are trying to sign, "he admitted.

"It would be nice if we could get him in before the weekend."
