Steve Clarke revealed his disappointment after witnessing Albion’s Capital Cup third round exit at home to Liverpool.
Albion took the lead after just three minutes when Gabriel Tamas volleyed home after Brad Jones’ error in the Liverpool goal.
But, against the run of play, Ben Foster’s uncharacteristic error allowed Liverpool to equalise after Nuri Sahin tried an optimistic 30 yard shot.
The visitors, buoyed by the goal, took control after the break and Sahin scored the winner for the Reds eight minutes from time.
“We said we’d have a go and we certainly started that way,” said the Baggies boss.
“I think their goal sort of knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit.
“I don’t know why.
“Maybe it was because it was such a soft goal to lose.
“After it became 1-1, they were better, passed it better, and we sat off them too much.
“The second half was much better, we got about them and pressed to make a game of it.
“The second half could have gone either way.”
