Striker Saido Berahino made the headlines again on transfer deadline day – but for all of the wrong reasons.
Albion rejected two separate offers from Tottenham Hotspur for the England Under-21 international, who then took to Twitter to speak of his unhappiness at not being able to leave The Hawthorns.
In a post minutes after the transfer window had closed, Berahino effectively declared he was going on strike by saying on he would “never play” again while Jeremy Peace was in charge of the club.
In a separate statement by the club, Peace again reiterated that Berahino was not for sale.
“We have a key player who has been very unsettled by antics which were designed to get him out of our club cheaply,” he said.
"Those tactics have continued despite my making our position clear in my first conversation with Daniel Levy on this subject in mid-August.”
Peace added that after Berahino’s outburst the club was ”left with the task of repairing the damage created by this unfortunate episode.”
Berahino is expected to be fined by the club and talks are scheduled with the player on Friday.
Meanwhile, before the closure of the transfer window, Albion completed the signings of Manchester United pair Jonny Evans for a deal which could rise up to £6m and goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard on a free transfer.
Joleon Lescott ended his contract dispute with the club by joining rivals Aston Villa for a deal which could reach up to £2m and Ideye Brown ended his mixed spell at The Hawthorns by joining Greek champions Olympiakos for a fee in the region of £4m.
