Roberto Di Matteo has backed Simon Cox to become a hit at The Hawthorns after giving the former Swindon striker his first league start in Albion colours on Saturday. After a pre-season dogged by an ankle injury, Cox finally made his first start against Plymouth Argyll helping the Baggies to a 3-1 victory.
Despite a slow start from the £1.9 million summer signing, Di Matteo is backing the 22-year-old to show his quality after making the step up from League One to the Championship.
“I think we need to be patient with him," said the head coach.
"It's a big step up to a top Championship team and I'm very confident he'll be fine.
"It's just a question of time really.
"He's a goalscorer, he's dangerous around the box and sniffs where the chances are - that's why we signed him."
