Editor's Blog: Interesting summer lies ahead

Since the final day of the season there have been subtle hints coming out of The Hawthorns, especially from Tony Mowbray, that although Albion will be looking to strengthen the squad it won't be through spending tens of millions of pounds. We all know that although we didn't run away with the Championship we were by far the best footballing team with a fine squad compiled by Tony Mowbray. However, anybody connected with the club would be foolish to believe that this group of players will be able to compete week in, week out, against England's elite.
Sure we played well against Portsmouth at Wembley, and with a little more luck we could have now been waiting excitedly for an FA Cup Final, but that was a one-off and I doubt whether this would be the case over the course of a Premiership season. While the contracts of Gera, Phillips and Alby drag on for another week, and Kim seems likely to sign on a permanent basis, reports today suggesting Albion are keeping tabs on Danish international 'keeper Jesper Christiansen and Polish international midfielder Radoslav Majewski would seem that Mowbray is hoping to bring in real quality. Whether Jezza will back him though is another story!
While I'll be hugely disappointed if money isn't spent on improving the team after our promotion windfall, looking back nearly a year it's amazing how much the playing staff has changed in just twelve months. This time last year we were still basking in our victory at the Molineux after Super-Kev and 'Joe' Kamara had taken advantage of Gary Breen's tired legs to put Albion in the driving seat towards Wembley. That day Kiely; McShane, Sodje, Perry, Robinson; Koren, Greening, Chaplow, Koumas; Phillips and Kamara lined up for the Baggies, and although too good for the Wolves, none of us could argue that Mowbray's close season signings haven't improved the side. An interesting summer awaits in the transfer market…
