Ben Foster wants to move on from Albion’s controversial defeat against Hull City and focus on this weekend’s six-pointer against Cardiff City.
Albion are just three points ahead of Cardiff – having played a game less than their relegation rivals.
Foster knows three points against the Red Dragons would be a huge boost towards keeping Albion in the Premier League and towards the magical 40-point mark.
“Thirty-six or 37 points might do it so we just need to get there as soon as possible, we can’t worry about finishing other teams off,” he said.
“It’s dog-eat-dog and you’ve got to focus on yourselves.
“We’ve got to try and put Saturday’s defeat at Hull behind us, have a good week’s training and focus on that Cardiff game, it’s a huge one now.
“We can’t really focus on other teams. We’ve got Cardiff on Saturday and that’s a monster for us now. We will put this one behind us and focus on that.”
Following the defeat against Hull City, Foster defended his ex-Albion teammate Shane Long for his involvement for the Tiger’s controversial spot kick.
He also questioned the logic of selling Long to one of Albion’s relegation rivals at a critical point in the season.
"I thought we did really well up until the penalty decision, which we were very disappointed with,” said the ex-Manchester United man.
"I was only metres away from it and I could see if definitely wasn't a penalty. It was a game changer.
“Longy, we had him and sometimes I think we ‘why did we let him go?'.
"It's not even hindsight - he was one of our best players from the last couple of years.
"When he went it was obviously a big blow for us because we know what he does.
“There would have been a lot of takers for Shane and it's disappointing that he's no longer here.
"But we can't look at that or blame that. Shane does what Shane does and we know what he's going to offer for another team and we've got to combat that.
“I don’t think it was a penalty and I don’t think Shane was looking for a penalty, but it’s another blow that we’ve just got to deal with and move on."
