Albion captain Jonathan Greening looks set to end a summer of uncertainty after being left out of last night’s victory against Peterborough. The former Manchester United and Middlesbrough midfielder was omitted from the squad by Roberto Di Matteo after the Baggies and Fulham reached advanced discussions regarding the 30-year-old.
The Baggies have already rejected three bids for the influential skipper with the latest offer believed to be in the region of £4.5 million. Greening himself wanted to play at London Road but Di Matteo believes that had more down to his professionalism and dedication towards the club than anything else.
“Basically, the two clubs are negotiating so I didn't feel it was right for Jonno to be involved," Albion’s head coach admitted.
"His team-mates are fighting for a cause.
"He's been a great professional for us and I spoke to him before the game.
“There has been a lot going on for him in the last five or six weeks but, once again, I have to emphasise he's been very good for us.
"He's been a true professional and it was my decision to pull him out tonight."
The disappointment of Greening’s exit could be damped by the news that the deal to bring Chilean defender, Gonzalo Jara, to The Hawthorns is back on after Albion had a fresh offer for the 23-year-old accepted. After pulling out of the deal at the final stages earlier this month, Roberto Di Matteo now looks set to capture the versatile defender, who now has to agree personal terms, pass a medical and secure a work permit.
“He's a Chilean international and is a defensive player who can also play in midfield," Di Matteo added.
"He will be able to cover various positions, which is good for me."
