Hodgson takes positives out of derby stalemate

Roy Hodgson crowned his side the Kings of the Midlands after watching his Albion side have the better of a 0-0 draw against rivals Aston Villa.

Albion had chances to send Villa further to the relegation zone but were denied by an excellent late save from Shay Given and by Alan Hutton handling Liam Ridgewell’s goal bound effort away to safety.

The draw saw Albion move on to 46 points – nine points ahead of Villa – and secure a position in the top half of the table.

But it was the clean sheet which caught Hodgson’s eye as Albion kept Villa’s chances down to a minimum.

"It was an entertaining derby despite the 0-0 scoreline and I'm happy enough with the point and to get a clean-sheet,"

"It's our tenth of the season, which is very good considering how difficult we found clean-sheets to come by last season.

"Ben did very well and I think both keepers were very deserving of the man-of-the-match epithet from their team.

"If the game had been played at Villa Park it could have been Given.

"Here it was Ben Foster and he has been very good of late, very lively.

"It's our fifth clean-sheet in six home games and he's got a good understanding with the back-four.

"We had a few crosses to deal with and I think we dealt with them, in the best part, reasonably well.

"And I thought we looked quite dangerous on the counter-attack.

"It was just the last pass that didn't work for us and we've been a bit unlucky in the respect that Shane Long and Peter Odemwingie have both had to miss a bit of training this week.

"They both suffered after last week's game at Liverpool, so we haven't really had the benefit of them in training all week and I think it showed a little bit today."
