So that’s that for another season. Thank God. Albion ended a disappointing season with another draw – leaving the Baggies winless in ten games.
Team
Tony Pulis again selected the same side with Craig Gardner supporting Salomon Rondon in attack. Gardner is never, and will never be a ‘No.10’. Saido Berahino again sat picking splinters out his backside. Exciting youngster Jonathan Leko kept his jersey.
Tactics
Same old. Albion sit deep. Defend the 18 yard box then lump it forward. Lose possession. Then repeat. And people wonder why Albion fans are frustrated.
Performance
Albion didn’t start too badly and took the lead when Jonathan Leko skipped past a few players before finding Salomon Rondon who fired home from a tight angle. While Albion were far from fluid, they were in control.
That was before Jonny Evans’ unfortunate left Jonas Olsson isolated. The Big Swede sat off Jordon Ibe who ran into the area and fired past Ben Foster.
The Baggies were much better after the break and deserved all three points with their second half display. Midfielders pushed up and Albion looked a threat.
Man of the Match
Salomon Rondon was a constant threat up front for Albion. Isolated at times and feeding off scraps at other times. The big Venezuelan never gave up and scored his tenth goal of the season. A great return when you consider he’s a flogged horse.
Talking Point
Albion turned 96 Smethwick End seats red as a mark of respect after the recent Hillsborough inquests. It was a fantastic gesture by the club and appreciated by the travelling fans.
Ref Watch
Rob Madley tried to let the game flow but in doing so missed some obvious fouls. Could’ve used more common sense when booking youngster Tyler Roberts moments after coming on for his Premier League debut.
What’s Next?
Interesting times ahead for Albion. Does Peace stick with Pulisball and a raft of disgruntled Albion fans? Or will he make a decision to install a more football-friendly coach. Either way, Albion’s squad again needs an overhaul this season. Time will show whether Pulis gets the opportunity to do so.
