Former Albion supermo Gary Megson has today insisted Roberto Di Matteo must strengthen his squad if they are to avoid relegation. The former Baggies chief guided the Baggies to two promotions during his time in the Black Country but failed to keep Albion in the top flight in his first attempt before being dismissed midway through his second attempt.
Megson knows all about the financial restrictions imposed on managers at The Hawthorns following his spell under Jeremy Peace but has urged the Baggies' board to invest in quality players before the Baggies travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday 14th August. The flame-haired boss realises Albion do not have the spending power of other Premier League clubs but used neighbours Birmingham City and Wolves as examples of how to survive without spending tens of millions.
"It depends what they do. If they go with what they've got now won't be able to do it," said 'Sir Gary".
"At some point they're going to have to speculate a little bit.
"Wolves did brilliantly last year but they had a little bit of a go at it. Birmingham were exactly the same.
"You do feel a little bit sorry for the supporters in terms of being the definitive yo-yo club.
"If that's all you want to do then it's fine - as long as you always do come back.
"The problems you have is when you don't do that but at some point West Brom have to kick on a little bit."
