No cup hangover for Olsson

Jonas Olsson believes Albion’s first defeat of the season against Arsenal will have no bearing against Crystal Palace on Saturday (KO 3pm).  The Baggies were unbeaten in all competitions prior to Tuesday but lost that record after the Carling Cup third round defeat.

Now, with attentions focused on the league again, Olsson insists no members of the squad are dwelling on Roberto Di Matteo’s first defeat in charge of Albion.  The league leaders now hope to continue their unbeaten start to the Championship season against 16th Palace.

“This won't affect us in the league - you have to look at how we played," Olsson insisted.

"We weren't smashed at Arsenal.

"We played a great team with ten men.

"We showed that we're in good shape.

"It wasn't to be on Tuesday but we gave as good as we got.

"The gaffer was disappointed that we lost because he wanted to maintain the unbeaten record but he knows you can lose in different kinds of ways.

"We did okay against Arsenal.

"And the players have shown we are inspired by him."

Olsson played in front of more than 50,000 fans on Tuesday night and hopes to test himself against the likes of Arsenal again next season – with Albion again in the Premier League.  His first visit to the Emirates has made the Swedish defender even more determined to secure promotion this term.

“This reminds us of what we are missing," he continued.

"It was an inspiration for us knowing that we were there last year and, if we do well this season, then we could be again next year.

"That is where we want to be next year.

"I didn't play at the Emirates last year as I hadn't yet joined.

"This is what we have to strive for as a club and as a player.

"We know that if we do well we can come back. It's an inspiration for us."
