Baggies boss Tony Pulis admitted his side needed their first home win of the season after beating Sunderland 1-0.
Saido Berahino's close range strike in the second half was enough to settle the sides during a tight affair.
The victory ended Albion's three match losing streak and moved the Baggies up into 12th position.
"Our first home win, and we needed it," he said.
"It was hard fought, a tough game. The main thing for us was to get the result, especially after the kick in the stomach we had in our last home game against Everton. We needed this for confidence.
"It's been a messy start in lots of respects. We've had several of our players wanting to get to the Euros and that has obviously been a big thing for them. Without question that takes a bit away from it.
"It's nice to get those players back, only for us to lose them again for another week in November."
