An unlikely Craig Dawson brace led West Bromwich Albion to a deserved win against shambolic Arsenal.

Dawson’s opener was cancelled out by Alexis Sanchez during a lively first half.

Super sub Hal Robson-Kanu restored Albion’s lead after the break before Dawson’s third goal of the season wrapped up the points.

Albion started brightly, with a superhuman burst from Allan Nyom past three Arsenal players down the left wing waking everyone up.

James McClean tested Petr Cech with a stinging shot following a typically swift counter-attack so it was arguably deserved when Dawson nodded in the resulting corner after a late near-post run to give the Baggies the lead.

Not that it lasted long. Just three minutes later Sanchez, who was left in acres of space at the back post, was easily picked out, darted inside, and roofed his finish.

The final score was 1-1 up in the skies where a pre-match protest plane bearing the slogan “No contract #Wenger out” was followed during the game by a second aircraft trailing a message of support for Arsenal’s beleaguered manager.

Down on the ground, though, there was only more misery for Arsène Wenger. This 3-1 defeat, Arsenal’s fourth in five Premier League matches, only deepens the sense that the Frenchman’s long reign is reaching an imminent, and unhappy, end.

Champions League qualification is looking less likely by the week for a team in their worst run of form since 1995 and Arsenal will finish the weekend down in sixth place if Manchester United win at Middlesbrough tomorrow. Most worrying of all was the nature of their defeat – Arsenal were well beaten here, second-best to a more determined Albion side.

Telegraph

The pattern of this match was established very quickly and, while Arsenal were dominant in possession, it was equally striking how West Brom were creating better chances with their fast counter-attacking breaks.

Allan Nyom set the tone when he powered into the penalty after intercepting a pass for Theo Walcott and, although his delivery was wasteful, the doubt in Arsenal's defending was obvious.

James McLean then soon forced a diving save of Petr Cech before Nacer Chadli floated the resultant corner onto the edge of the six-yard box.

Darren Fletcher had been positioned in front of Cech and, while there was no direct infringement, the Arsenal goalkeeper struggled to get himself to the ball as Craig Dawson towered easily above the rest of the Arsenal defence to head West Brom into the lead. Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey were especially culpable.
