West Brom utility man Steve Watson has joined Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season. The 32-year-old, who has made more than 300 Premiership appearances in his career, will help bolster Brian Laws' Owls squad after a run of seven games without a win. Laws said "We're delighted to sign Steve, he's an outstanding player who has played at the very top of his profession. The lowest he has been is in the Championship and he just wants to kick-start his career. He has got a lot left in him and has also played in a lot of positions including centre-half, midfield and right-back, so he can adapt to anywhere you put him. It's a great signing for us and one that we've been trying to chase for a while."
Laws also praised Wednesday chairman Dave Allen for backing his pursuit of the former Newcastle and Everton man. "I hope the supporters appreciate the fact that we've tried to go out and get quality," he added. "We've not gone for an unknown player but a player who can do it at this level and I would like to thank the chairman for his support."
Watson will be available for Saturday's match at Burnley but will not face the Baggies when Wednesday visit The Hawthorns on April 14. Watson said: "I thought a loan deal would be a great idea for both parties. I've got a lot of experience and games under my belt to bring to the team. "I've played at the stadium loads of times with various clubs and I know the crowd is fantastic and the stadium is brilliant."
