Albion’s youngest ever player George Thorne is set sign his first professional contract with the club.
The academy midfielder, who only turned 17 on Monday, has been at the club for six years and made his professional debut as a late substitute during Albion’s comfortable 4-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday back in November.
Thorne, who has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level, will sign an 18-month contract, plus a further year in the club’s favour, before tonight’s kick-off against Nottingham Forest (KO 19.45).
“I've known George for the best part of nine years and I brought him with me when I joined Albion six years ago," said Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth.
"I've watched him progress through the ranks and he fully deserves his pro contract because he's a sensible boy with a great work ethic
"He can perform a number of roles in central midfield and can also play at centre-half.
"If he keeps his feet on the ground, he's got a great future in the game."
Another academy graduate David Worrall has joined his former club Bury after a successful five-month loan spell on a free transfer. The 19-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Shakers. The deal also includes performance related add-ons and a 50% sell on clause.
