However with Mowbray still looking to strengthen his squad, Greening could find himself in some unusual positions as tactics play a part.
"I see Jonathan as a top player and a very high-class footballer," Hawthorns boss, Tony Mowbray said.
"He still wants to learn, as we all do, and I include myself in that.
"We've got a journey to go and we've got to learn as we go along.
"In my mind Jonathan brings versatility to my team and I do see him, sometimes this season, playing on the wing and not in centre-midfield, and sometimes behind a striker or in a sitting role where he can dictate the game.
"Ultimately, I hope to have enough players in the squad when the transfer window shuts so we have lots of different options.
"Jonathan is another player with the quality required to play at this level and the quality to play in different positions in our team.
"I'm delighted he's part of our set-up and I'm sure he's looking forward to the challenge of the Premier League and hopefully a better season than the one the last time we were in this league."
