Lee Hughes, West Bromwich Albion's £2.5million record signing, scored his first league goals since rejoining the club 12 months ago as Burnley were swept aside at the Hawthorns.

Super-sub Hughes, who returned to Albion from Coventry City last August, struck twice in the final three minutes as Albion came from a goal down to record their first win of the season.

Burnley, who have lost their opening two league games of the season, had taken the lead through Robbie Blake only for Albion to bounce back through Artim Sakiri, Rob Hulse and the Hughes double.

Delighted Albion boss Gary Megson said: "We have waited a long time to see goals like that from Lee Hughes.

"His first was absolutely marvellous and hopefully he can go on from here.

"Overall, I thought we deserved to win but perhaps not by that final scoreline."

Disappointed Burnley boss Stan Ternent left the ground without attending the post-match conference.

Albion goalkeeper Russell Hoult was left red-faced after 27 minutes when Blake beat him to fire Burnley into the lead.

Albion's defence was caught napping when Tony Grant played a quick free-kick to Blake who was some 25 yards from goal.

Blake took a couple of steps forward and unleashed a swerving drive which Hoult appeared to have covered. But the ball squirmed through his hands.

Fortunately for Hoult his blushes were spared just four minutes later by Macedonian international Sakiri's wonder strike.

There appeared to be no danger when Sakiri, who famously scored direct from a corner against England last season, collected the ball some 35 yards from goal after a pass from Hulse.

But he unleashed a fierce curling left-foot drive that left Burnley's former Albion goalkeeper Brian Jensen grasping at fresh air.

Any hopes Albion had of then taking charge of the game were almost dashed within 60 seconds as they survived a major scare.

Blake and Glen Little saw their close-range shots cleared off the line before Alan Moore hit the post before Albion's harassed defence managed to force the ball clear.

It was a let-off that Albion took full advantage of when Hulse struck his third goal in two games 14 minutes into the second half.

Jason Koumas sent over a corner that the unmarked Hulse was able to head home from 12 yards.

Hulse could have doubled his tally a minute later only to be denied by the post after being released by Hughes.

But that only served to leave the stage clear for Hughes to grab the headlines.

He volleyed his first past Jensen from 20 yards after teeing the all up himself - and was then booked for celebrating the goal with the Albion fans.

He completed Albion's success when he poked the ball home after surging clear of the Burnley defence.
